Common Mistakes That Kill Your Score

Avoid these classic pitfalls that trap unprepared test-takers.

Memorizing Answers

Examiners are trained to spot rehearsed answers instantly. This will drop your Speaking and Writing scores to a Band 6 automatically.

Ignoring Word Limits

"Write NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS." If the answer is "a book" and you write "a red book", you lose the mark. Precision is key.

Off-Topic Essays

Writing beautifully about a topic slightly different from the prompt will result in a heavy penalty in Task Response.

Leaving Blanks

There is no negative marking in IELTS Reading or Listening. Always guess if you don't know the answer!

Spelling & Plurals

In the Listening test, if the answer is "cars" and you write "car", it is marked wrong. Pay attention to plurals and exact spelling.

Overusing Complex Words

Using "big words" incorrectly is worse than using simple words correctly. Focus on natural collocation and context.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about taking the IELTS.

IELTS results are generally valid for exactly 2 years from the date you took the test. After this period, institutions usually require you to retake the exam.

It depends entirely on your personal preference. The test format, difficulty, and scoring are identical. If you type faster than you write and prefer editing essays on a screen, choose computer-delivered. Results for the computer-based test are also available much faster (usually 3-5 days).

Yes! The IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) allows you to retake any one module (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) within 60 days of your original test date, without having to take all four modules again. (Note: OSR availability depends on your test center).

Your overall band score is the average of your four module scores, rounded to the nearest half or whole band. For example, if you score 6.5, 6.5, 7.0, and 7.0, your average is 6.75, which rounds up to an overall Band 7.0.
